F&S ASSET MANAGEMENT PLAN

The higher education landscape continues to transform rapidly, with new research technologies, modern learning environments, and enrollment growth. These changes necessitate upgrading the condition, quality, functionality, and safety features of campus facilities to keep pace.

Asset Management PlanThe F&S Asset Management Plan, 2021–2025, proposes a comprehensive five-year approach for capital projects, deferred maintenance, and extensive equipment repair and replacement to care for the nearly 24 million gross square feet of state-supported building space on the Urbana campus. The plan relies on facility condition assessments and specific project selection strategies to prioritize preventive maintenance and improvement work that maximize their positive impact on the teaching and research spaces for the largest number of students and faculty.

This university has made tremendous advancements through complete building renovations and ongoing programs, such as the Academic Facilities Maintenance Fund Assessment (AFMFA), and additional deferred maintenance initiatives with assistance from the Office of the Provost, to renew aging infrastructure and direct funding to target significant upcoming life-cycle cost needs. The plan aims to extend these efforts through a set of recommendations to update facility condition assessments, streamline reporting processes, promote campuswide partnerships, and seek additional state budget requests to expand and expedite projects.

F&S will provide an updated summary each year to benchmark progress and highlight how asset management is vital to achieving many organizational and university strategic goals. The plan is a key objective of the F&S Strategic Plan: Foundations for the Future, which emphasizes that new buildings and infrastructure improvements require collaborative planning and regular assessment.

The university’s tradition of excellence in teaching and research relies on attracting and retaining highly talented individuals whose scholarship, discovery, and innovation will change the world. Through the continuous stewardship and revitalization of its facilities, F&S is committed to supporting transformative and experiential learning experiences for future generations of Illini.
