Intern – Utilities & Energy Services
In this role, you will provide assistance to the RCx (Retro Commissioning) efforts including creating and updating color coded floorplans and field verifying existing mechanical equipment in the field. You’ll also be assisting staff as directed. The role requires 6 to 10 hours per week during Fall/Spring semester, and up to 20 hours per week during the Summer semester. The ideal candidate will work with RCx for several years.
Preferred Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of the use of personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel, Autocad, Adobe and other microsoft office products.
- Undergraduate or graduate Engineering or Architecture student preferred

Intern – Energy Management Services
UES INTERN – Energy Management Services
The EMS (Energy Management Services) group is seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated student intern to support its various activities. It would be desirable if the candidate could work 20+ hours per week through the Summer semester with the opportunity to continue working through the Fall and Spring semester at 6-10 hours a week.
The student candidate should be a junior, senior, or graduate student in Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
Position Responsibilities:
- Support project crews:
- Field verifies equipment, update building floor plans through Adobe, AutoCAD, and/or Bluebeam.
- Assist in creating detailed shop drawings, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Assist with creating spreadsheet files for calculations and energy tracking purposes.
- Perform site visits to assist with:
- Inventory/labeling of equipment.
- Assist with active projects.
- Assist with closeout documents.
Preferred Knowledge:
- General knowledge and experience with personal computers, Excel spreadsheets (VBA or Power BI), AutoCAD, and Adobe.

Intern – Safety & Compliance
In this role you will enter and name fire extinguisher locations using existing AutoCAD floor plans. This may include occasional field work in campus facilities to verify fire extinguisher locations and building updates. You’ll also perform backend data entry and development using departmental information management systems.
Preferred Knowledge:
- Excellent fundamental skills in the use of AutoCAD and Microsoft excel.
- General knowledge and experience with personal computers Microsoft word.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Intern – Customer Relations & Communications
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has an opening for a Communications Intern with Facilities & Services (F&S). In this role you will identify and publicize news about F&S and its events, as well as the highlights and accomplishments of the F&S workforce. This work upholds both the campus and F&S brand and messaging strategies.
Position Responsibilities:
- Work under the direction of the Media Communications Coordinator, and with F&S staff and campus customers to create and share new F&S content
- Writing and reporting for online/printed feature stories
- Photography
- Content updates to F&S public website and employee intranet as needed
- Writing, monitoring, and scheduling content for F&S Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts
- Develop creative ways to drive engagement and increase followers across social media channels
- Assists with simple graphic design creation

Preferred Knowledge:

Intern – Asset Data Collection & Verification
This is a position with the Building Maintenance & Grounds (BMG) Department as an Intern. As a member of BMG, you will assist with Asset data review and collection related work activities such as the Braille Signage verification program, Water Fountain data collection program, and various projects where architectural and mechanical equipment and systems are inventoried and catalogued. The assignment for this position(s) will be associated with building systems and equipment review and field data collection activities involving as-built conditions.
Duties associated with this Program will include but not be limited to:
- Working with Building Maintenance and Grounds Staff on assigned projects.
- This individual will compile project information using Drawings, Word and Excel.
- Review building drawings specifically reviewing Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) plans.
- Filed work inspecting and verification activities for Baille Signage.
- Reporting on the status of Project tasks.
- Working with drawings and lists for field labelling work in buildings.
- Keeping an accurate record of daily activities to be shared with the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds or their designee.
- Work with the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds or their designee to establish schedules to include milestones.

Intern – Code Compliance & Fire Safety
We are seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated student intern to support the Code Compliance & Fire Safety department this summer.
The student should be an undergraduate or graduate student in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Engineering, Management, or a related field.
Position Responsibilities:
- On-site documentation of code and life safety building systems, including but limited to fire suppression systems, room occupant loads, etc.
- Ability to interpret design documents and building and life safety codes.
- Assist with updating Code Compliance & Fire Safety documents.
Knowledge Preferred:
- General knowledge and experience with personal computers and Excel.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Intern – Capital Programs
In this role, you will assist with the Capital Programs Divisions at Facilities and Services.
Position responsibilities:
- Research construction documents and perform site verification of existing conditions.
- Perform classroom assessments and request work orders.
- Assist with campus planning and deferred maintenance programs with project data tracking and analysis.
- Develop reports from FCPWeb and other campus-based programs.

- Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access
- MS Project or other scheduling software
- Adobe including Acrobat, Photoshop and Creative Suite
- AutoCAD or similar Computer Aided Drafting
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, landscape architecture or related field.
- Coursework toward a master’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management.
- Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination or enrolled in NCARB.
- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation.

Intern – Capital Project Management
CAPITAL PROGRAMS: PROJECT MANAGEMENT INTERN
Graduate Student Hourly Position effective May 15, 2024
Position reports to: Associate Director of Project Management, Jon Hasselbring
We are seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated graduate student intern to support the Capital Programs project managers this summer.
Responsibilities include:
- Examine and critique contractor schedules
- Review Request for Proposals (RFPs) and evaluate contractor cost estimates
- Produce Daily Reports – Accompany Project Manager (PM) onsite and produce the Daily Report to be reviewed by the PM prior to sending to the contractor.
- Develop Spreadsheets, generally, and as required
- Sort email for archives – as PM requires or as Intern is qualified
- For training:
- Attend project kick-off meetings.
- Attend Client/PSC/OAC meetings as requested.
- Assist Contract Specialists in the work of approving Schedule of Values Subcontractor (SVS) and Professional Service Consultants (PSCs or A/E)
- Assist with Bi-monthly reports – under the supervision of the PM
- Assist with closeout of projects – under the supervision of the PM
PREFERRED: Need to be detail oriented and self-motivated. Students should be in the graduate program of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
We will either hire one student to work 40 hours per week, or two students to each work 20 hours per week. The position would start May 15 and end August 18, 2024. Pre-scheduled un-paid vacation time can be requested, up to two weeks total.

Intern – Project CAD Operator
PROJECT CAD OPERATOR INTERN
This is a position with Facilities and Services, Building Maintenance & Grounds (BMG) Department as an Intern. The work is to assist with Project related work activities such as the Storm Water Cross Connection program and various projects where CAD is utilized.
The assignment for this position(s) will be associated with building systems review, associated CAD and possible field work involving as-built conditions.
Duties associated with this Program will include but not be limited to:
- Working with Building Maintenance and Grounds Staff on assigned projects.
- This individual will read and compile project information using AutoCAD, Revit, Word and Excel.
- Review building drawings specifically reviewing Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) plans.
- Producing sketches of plumbing system areas to indicate drains where possible cross connections may possibly exist.
- Status project activities as directed. Such as asking individuals if specific tasks have been completed.
- Reporting on the status of Project tasks.

- Keeping an accurate record of daily activities to be shared with the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds or their designee.

May also participate in other HR areas including labor/employee relations, payroll and management/strategic initiatives. Receive, sort and file (electronic and physical) personnel-related documents. Observe and assist with F&S ERHR Search initiatives, which may include, but is not limited to, preparing candidate packets and preparing other interview material for the search committee. The Facility Operations Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the management and ongoing development and implementation of a proactive maintenance program for the Recommissioning (ReCx) group of F&S – Utilities and Energy Services Division. Duties include the development and implementation of recommissioning documentations, revising and updating database/records/condition assessment of building automation and HVAC equipment.
