Campus Simulated Spill Containment Exercise

Sep 16, 2025 | 8:11 am

This year's mock scenario will take place across locations on south campus.

Several members of the Champaign Fire Department stand near a storm sewer inlet where the spill containment exercise is taking place. A green dye is in the water behind them.

F&S, the Division of Public Safety, and the Champaign Fire Department will conduct a spill containment exercise on Tuesday, September 30. The drill will occur between 8 and 10 a.m., beginning with a simulated call to 911.

To represent an oil spill during this year’s mock scenario, event organizers will place dye in the storm drains around the National Petascale Computing Facility, near the intersection of South Oak Street and St. Mary’s Road. The dye will then travel southward along storm sewers and open channels connected to the Embarras River. Multiple response vehicles will track this activity across this part of the campus, which will also include setting up a mobile command center.

The exercise is required annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and satisfies Abbott Power Plant’s Facility Response Plan requirements. More information about spill response is available on the F&S website.

Thanks for your help in sharing this information with students, faculty, and staff who may be located nearby during the exercise. For questions, please contact Compliance Professional Bill Walsh, 217-300-7707.
