Campus Simulated Spill Containment Exercise

F&S, the Division of Public Safety, and the Champaign Fire Department will conduct a spill containment exercise on Tuesday, October 6. The drill will run from approximately 8 to 10 a.m. and will begin with a simulated 911 call.

To represent an oil spill during this year’s mock scenario, event organizers will place green dye in the storm drains around Abbott Power Plant (1117 S. Oak Street). The dye will then travel northeast along storm sewers and open channels connected to the Boneyard Creek. Multiple response vehicles will track this activity across this part of the campus, which will also include setting up a mobile command center. Please share this information with any students, faculty, staff, and groups on Bardeen Quad and other areas of the Urbana campus near the creek where these coordinated activities may be visible.

The exercise is required annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and satisfies Abbott Power Plant’s Facility Response Plan requirements. More information about spill response and the importance of maintaining local waterways is available on the F&S website.
