Fire Hydrant Flushing

The proactive maintenance begins August 5 across campus.

F&S team members will flush campus fire hydrants from Monday, August 4, to Friday, August 15. The annual work will be performed by crews during early morning hours to minimize any potential inconveniences, such as lower-than-typical water pressure or temporarily discolored water.

Water will continue to be safe to use and consume during the hydrant flushing period. However, if possible, wait until flushing has concluded in your area before using water. Then, run cold water from a faucet until it clears.

This proactive maintenance helps improve overall water quality by clearing the buildup of mineral deposits from the water mains. The process also confirms proper hydrant operation and ensures adequate water flow is available to facilities. The university tests the water distribution system regularly, following US Environmental Protection Agency and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency protocols.
