Fire Hydrant Flushing

Jul 13, 2026 | 12:56 pm

The proactive maintenance begins August 5 across campus.

F&S team members will flush campus fire hydrants from Monday, July 20, to Friday, August 7. The annual work will be performed by Water Station crews during the early morning hours to minimize potential inconveniences, such as lower-than-typical water pressure or temporary discoloration.

Water will remain safe to use and consume during the hydrant-flushing period. However, if possible, wait until flushing has concluded in your area before using water. Then, run cold water from a faucet until it clears.

This proactive maintenance helps improve overall water quality by clearing mineral buildup from the water mains. The process also confirms proper hydrant operation and ensures adequate water flow is available to facilities. The university tests the water distribution system regularly, following protocols from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

For questions or in the event of an urgent situation related to this work, contact the F&S Service Office, 217-333-0340.
