F&S team members and city, county, and state workers are prepared for pothole season as the freeze-thaw pattern intensifies. You can help with this process by reporting potholes, including identifying problematic areas as they occur. Potholes form when cracks in the surface allow moisture to seep into paved areas. The freezing and thawing cycle weakens and eventually breaks asphalt or concrete under the pressure of consistent traffic.
To fill potholes that have developed on university-owned streets, bicycle lanes, and pathways, crews will initially use a cold patch mixture and then apply direct heat to help the material adhere to the pavement. Cold patch is a temporary solution for these compromised pavements. F&S will deploy a hot-mix trailer and rollers to apply new asphalt to affected areas later this spring and summer, when temperatures are warm and dry enough to provide optimal conditions for resurfacing.
