Illini Football Tailgate Recycling – Returns vs. Indiana

Nov 01, 2023 | 12:35 pm

Keep items from reaching the landfill at Memorial Stadium

Zero Waste Tailgate - Lot 31 & Grange Grove during the Illini's game against Indiana

The first-ever Illini Tailgate Recycling event earlier this season diverted more than 1,000 pounds of recyclable materials from local landfills. To build on the initial success, volunteers will be back in Lot 31 and Grange Grove this Saturday when Illinois Football takes on Indiana at Memorial Stadium.

If you plan to attend the game and are in or near the collection areas, please join others in recycling as many plastic bottles and aluminum cans and bottles as possible. Individuals in RVs or vehicles entering Lot 31 and Lot 32 will once again be given blue bags to use to drop off empty bottles and cans at the utility-sized recycling dumpster on the east side of Lot 31, along First Street. Acceptable materials may be placed by fans into orange and blue recycling boxes within Grange Grove, around the Illinois Tent in Lot 31, or directly into the green dumpster. Approximately 20 volunteers will be ready to assist with the collection efforts.

The recycling event on the Urbana campus is a part of the Don’t Waste initiative. Coca-Cola; the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics; the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE); and Facilities & Services are partnering to reduce waste at major campus events and support reaching zero waste goals.
