2024 Campus Bicycle Network Master Plan CoverThe 2024 Campus Bicycle Plan is approved and available on the University of Illinois System’s Urbana campus master planning web page. The plan (PDF file) includes the feedback received during the public comment period during the fall semester.

The continued participation and input from students, faculty, staff, and community members have been critical to informing plan development by analyzing existing bike conditions, redefining objectives, refining educational opportunities, and identifying the next steps for upgrades to the active transportation network at the U. of I.

Initial Bike Plan Accomplishments

The bicycle plan will build on the successes over the last 10 years, including the following:

  • Completed 100% of high-priority and 72% of the medium-priority infrastructure projects from the 2014 Campus Bicycle Master Plan.
  • Expanded bicycle parking to 14,000 spots, including an enclosed shelter.
  • Secured additional student-approved funding support for programming and infrastructure projects.
  • Renewed the silver-level Bicycle Friendly University status.
  • Installed 17 bicycle repair stations and 23 automated bicycle and pedestrian Eco-Counters to assess circulation patterns.
  • Started a bike share program on campus through contractual agreements with Veo and Bird fleets.
  • Joined the Project 529 bicycle registration system and national database.

The plan’s updated objectives will be to enhance safety, increase sustainability, aid mobility, identify emerging needs for funding support, raise the university’s standing in bicycle friendliness, and bring more innovation and advancements to bike infrastructure.
