The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is charged by our state to enhance the lives of citizens in Illinois, across the nation, and around the world through our leadership in learning, discovery, engagement, and economic development. One of the most important facets of our campus is our enduring commitment to sustainability. Through intersectional, intergenerational climate resiliency, the campus community of tomorrow can continue to prosper and enjoy the extensive network of resources that the university provides.

Like many institutions, the groundwork of the university spreads far and wide. The purpose of Sustain Illinois is to break down institutional barriers and engage across units, disciplines, and cultures. Together, we can uplift a more informed, more connected campus community. The work on campus sustainability is founded upon the Illinois Climate Action Plan, the university’s strategic vision to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 or sooner. The effects of climate change are impacting communities unequally—gender, race, geographic location, and socioeconomic class all play a role. Foundational to climate action is justice and ensuring that programs are culturally and economically inclusive.

Whether you are a student, faculty, staff, or community member, information collated in this guidebook has been designed with you in mind. This resource is intended to be a high-level touch point for all things campus sustainability.
