The Illini Union Roof Replacement Project

Whether attending a conference, grabbing a bite to eat, participating in an Illini Union Board or RSO-sponsored event, or engaging in other activities, the Union helps bring thousands of people together daily. The facility’s wide-ranging services and cherished spaces contribute greatly to the sense of community, collaboration, and inspiration on campus.

To ensure the building remains ready for the next 85 years to welcome students, faculty, staff, and visitors, crews began a comprehensive roof replacement in 2024. To support unit operations and construction logistics, the project was implemented in a thoughtful, multiyear, phased approach to modernize the three separate roofs (north, south, and center), replace 78 dormers, and revitalize accompanying window trim.
