The project will provide new metal trim, flashing, copings, fascia and lighting protection with roofing system upgrades. - UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL – CRITICAL REPAIRS FY16-17 The project will provide an overall analysis of the building electrical demand and the design and replacement of a new substation.
- ENGINEERING SCIENCES BUILDING – ENERGY PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING
In July 2015, the Board of Trustees approved Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) identified and designed during the Investment Grade Audit for five College of Engineering buildings (Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, Loomis Laboratory, Engineering Sciences Building, and Superconductivity Center). Energy Services Group, LLC was contracted as the ESCO. Construction on this approximately $41M project began in January 2016 with substantial completion of the entire project expected by July 2018 (Work on the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory is substantially complete). - AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY A – TEMPORARY WALL SHORING
The project will install a bracing system or interior buttress for unreinforced masonry piers in Aeronautical Laboratory A. - SUPERCONDUCTIVITY CENTER – ENERGY PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING

The project is part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative which is renovating the building to become the home for the Department of Bioengineering. The renewal will include the creation of 11,000 GSF of new research area and associated support space. Upgrades to the aging HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems will be made. A new roof, widows, and doors will be installed and exterior masonry, concrete, and stone work will take place. - DANIELS HALL – SEVEN STORY BUILDING ROOF REPLACEMENT The project will replace the existing roof on the seven story building and the elevator penthouse and include base flashing, edge flashing, edge metal trim, and other accessories necessary to provide a complete and water-tight roof replacement.
- FRED TURNER STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING – COUNSELING CENTER OFFICE REMODEL The project will include the remodeling of existing office space in the Fred Turner Student Services Center Building. Counseling Center staff will move to the basement level, first and second floor of the building from the Illini Media facility and McKinley Health Center. This project will include building new office space within existing space, as well as providing breakroom storage, workstations for administrative staff, cosmetic upgrades and furniture to some of the available spaces, and new audio-visual equipment in two existing group counseling rooms.
- ILLINI UNION – REFRIGERATION COOLING TOWER REPLACEMENT The Illini Union has total of six ice makers, twenty-one refrigeration units and eight freezer units which require cooling water. The project will replace the existing refrigeration water cooling tower with chilled water heat exchangers that will provide more reliable and more energy-efficient service to all of the built-in refrigeration and freezer units in the building. These units are currently served from an existing recirculating condensing water system. This system will be replaced with digitally-controlled, dual condenser water heat exchangers to be located in mechanical room.
ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION PANEL/FEEDER REPLACEMENT
The existing electrical panelboard will be replaced in the south building basement mechanical room along with its associated main feeder and conduit. COMBINED HOOD & AHU DIRECT DIGITAL CONTROL RENOVATION
The project will reduce the volume of conditioned air exhausted from the building by adding direct digital controls, modifying constant air volume systems, replacing exhaust fans with a Campus Chilled Water System-enabled fan coil system, and optimizing variable air volume systems. - NATURAL HISTORY BUILDING RENOVATION
The Natural History Building project is a comprehensive phased renovation plan and capital construction implementation for the facility, which was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in November 1986 as part of the Nathan C. Ricker thematic district. The building serves the School of Earth, Society, and Environment and the School of Integrative Biology, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. (More information: Click Here) - BURRILL HALL – MOLLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY (MCB) CENTER FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING & INSTRUCTION Repurpose 16,700 GSF of former library space in Burrill to accommodate programmatic needs of the MCB by expanding instructional and advising capacity to meet student demand and modernize learning spaces. The renovation work will include minor interior demolition for remodeling, new partitions and finishes, moderate exterior expansion for egress components, related mechanical infrastructure upgrades for indoor heating and cooling/air quality and electrical distribution for power and telephone and data.
- HENRY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING – MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS PHASE II Project work will include new finishes, partitions, accessories, lighting and plumbing fixtures. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades will occur along with code compliance updates and potential reconfiguration of the restrooms.
ENVELOPE REPAIR & HVAC UPGRADE The project will include a prioritized window replacement, masonry, stone, and concrete repair, and an HVAC upgrade. The exterior building envelope will be improved to provide energy efficiency, controllability, reduced maintenance, and better thermal comfort.
EXTERIOR AND VESTIBULE DOOR RESTORATION The project will restore 48 exterior and vestibule doors and hardware, modify glazing in and adjacent to doors to comply with code requirements. The work will make the west building entrance on Wright Street accessible by adding power operators and to one set of exterior doors and one set of vestibule doors, and make vestibule doors at Wright Street entrance code-compliant in terms of egress width. The repairing and polishing of terrazzo in all vestibules as well as replacing marble base in select locations will also occur. - NOYES LABORATORY RENOVATION – NANOSCALE THEORY CENTER The project will renovate approximately 10,600 GSF located on the third floor. Work will address programming requisites such as the development of innovative spaces for computational analysis and relocation of existing functions and resources into the repurposed area. WEST CLASSROOM RENOVATION Renovate general assignment and departmental classrooms, corridors, and ancillary spaces in the existing west wing of the building along with the creation of new flexible learning classrooms. Improvements will include new windows and exterior doors, HVAC, life safety upgrades, stairs, and restroom remodels.
ELECTRICAL UPGRADES FY16-17 Noyes Laboratory’s electrical distribution system will be reconfigured, including the replacement of a substation. - KRANNERT CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS (KCPA) – FUME EXHAUST UPGRADES
Replacing fume exhaust systems in the scene shop paint booth, costume shop dye room, and the wig shop will separate the industrial spaces mechanically from the office/rehearsal spaces. Due to the nature of the facility, construction activities will take into account the importance of building acoustics and minimize inconveniences. The work is funded through Academic Maintenance Facilities Fund Assessment student fees. FALL PROTECTION IMPROVEMENTS Fall protection for existing ladders in seven locations will be upgraded throughout the building. ELECTRICAL UPGRADES FY16-17 The medium voltage and low voltage equipment serving KPCA will be replaced. - SHERMAN HALL – SHOWER REPAIRS There are 114 suite style bathroom facilities in the 13-story high-rise which will be evaluated for repair. Work is expected to include removal of the existing showers and water risers, replacement of the water riser serving the showers, construction of new showers and finishes. The showers will be renovated in their existing location within the bathrooms.
- PSYCHOLOGY LABORATORY – LOWER LEVEL CLASSROOM RENOVATION The project will create new 30 and 78 seat innovate, collaborative classrooms by combining existing rooms. As part of the work, flooring will be replaced in corridors adjacent to these rooms. - ENGLISH BUILDING – GROUP FACULTY OFFICE UPGRADES Office upgrades will include repairs to floor tile, ceiling tile, plaster walls and necessary electrical repairs. SLATE ROOF REPLACEMENT The existing slate roof will be replaced with a new slate roof matching the original slate in material, shingle size, and color. Approximately 21,800 GSF on the east and north wings of the building will be replaced.
- ICE ARENA – PORTABLE ICE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
A new refrigeration system and ice mat will be installed prior to the facility reopening for the start of the fall semester. The new refrigeration system is more efficient and has a 10-year life expectancy. The renovation also includes new rubber flooring around the rink, a new dashboard system, and new lobby lighting and flooring. LOCKER AND LOCK REPLACEMENT The project will include replacement of 216 lockers in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms and the replacement of the locks (a total of 600 locks at CRCE & ARC) on all the day-use lockers. For more information: Click Here PAINTING PROJECT Painting and patching walls throughout the facility. - GREGORY HALL – CLASSROOM 112 AHU AND SEATING REPLACEMENT
The project will include the replacement of the fixed seating with table arms and the flooring on the main floor (excluding the stage). The new seating will meet accessibility code requirements and university facilities standards for accessibility. This project will create a sloped floor connection from the back of the room to the stage. The twin entries at the back of the room will be re-configured to provide accessible entries and accommodate acoustical requirements for the classroom. The project will also replace the AHU serving room 112. LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES The improvements will work together to enhance the life safety levels for users through the installation of fire alarm systems and upgrades to various components. - FOELLINGER AUDITORIUM – LED DOME LIGHTING Upgrade the lighting in the facility by replacing the existing exterior dome night lighting with new LED lamps, conduits, electrical infrastructure including junction boxes, raceways, and a lighting control system. LIFE SAFETY CORRECTIONS The improvements will work together to enhance the life safety levels for users through the early notification of the building occupants of the presence of fire, limiting the expansion of a fire event, and providing a code-compliant exit rout to quickly and safely leave the building.
- AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES – ETHNIC STUDIES FACILITY REPAIRS Comprehensive repair work for African American Studies (1201 W. Nevada) including slate roofing, sheet metal flashing, door hardware, windows, painting, sprinkler systems, exit signage, and emergency lighting. Mechanical system upgrades will enable third floor and basement conditioned air improvements. EXTERIOR STAIRS The project will replace an existing, exterior exposed wood stairway from the third floor with exterior steel stairs while improving egress routes.
- MUSIC BUILDING – ROOF REPLACEMENTS
The project will provide new metal trim, flashing, copings, fascia and lighting protection with roofing system upgrades. The Music Building has roof mounted mechanical equipment that will need to be raised to accommodate increased insulation under the new roof membrane. - ABBOTT POWER PLANT – GAS BOILER REPLACEMENT – PHASE 2 Abbott Power Plant’s 77-year-old south stack will be taken down with work anticipated for completion during the summer. Abbott is replacing the recently decommissioned stack and two 1970s boilers with two new low-emission, high-efficiency Babcock & Wilcox gas boilers. The new boilers, which utilize shorter stacks, will be operational by December. Steam and electricity production service to campus buildings and plant access for educational tours and research will remain uninterrupted during the work.
- ARMORY – CITL RENOVATION The project will renovate office and classroom spaces in the Armory for the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning. The work will include exterior renovation to the northeast quadrant of the building including tuckpointing, parapet and roof repair, and window replacement. First floor spaces along the north perimeter of the building will be renovated to provide offices and collaborative work areas. First floor spaces along the main east corridor will be repurposed to provide innovative and flexible classrooms. SOUTH EXTERIOR ENVELOPE & FLOORS 1 & 2 OFFICE REMODELING Air and moisture infiltration within the building envelope will be corrected by tuckpointing masonry walls and replacing parapets and stone finials, roofing, skylights, and windows. Walls, miscellaneous surface repairs, painting, ceilings, flooring, lighting, ADA door hardware and signage will also be addressed. The project will also include the installation of a new AHU and distribution system on the Campus Chilled Water System which will provide air conditioning to the south first and second floors of this building. NEW INDOOR THROWING CAGE A new indoor throwing cage will be installed to protect athletes and bystanders. The new 69’ long x 25’ high system will be ceiling mounted and electronically operated. COURT FLOOR REPLACEMENT Tile athletic flooring will be replaced in the multi-purpose courts with a new advanced rubber sheet flooring. - ALLEN HALL – AHU REPLACEMENT The project will replace the dining room air handling unit along with associated ductwork, piping, and electrical connected into and serving this unit.

- RICHARD D. AND ANNE MARIE IRWIN DOCTORAL STUDY HALL RENOVATION (FORMERLY THE SURVEYING BUILDING)
The complete interior and exterior of the 113-year-old Survey Building will be renovated to create a state-of-the art study center for more than 90 College of Business doctoral students. The facility will be renamed the Richard D. and Anne Marie Irwin Doctoral Study Hall.The building will provide a contemporary infrastructure for business doctoral and post-doctoral scholars as they pursue their research and teaching activities. - ARCHITECTURE BUILDING – MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS PHASE II Project work will include new finishes, partitions, accessories, lighting and plumbing fixtures. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades will occur along with code compliance updates and potential reconfiguration of the restrooms.
- MUMFORD HALL – HVAC UPGRADES The projects will replace existing air handling units along with new controls and connection to the Campus Chilled Water System.
- ANIMAL SCIENCES LABORATORY- ROOF REPLACEMENTS
- The project will provide new metal trim, flashing, copings, fascia and lighting protection with roofing system upgrades. The laboratory has roof mounted mechanical equipment that will need to be raised to accommodate increased insulation under the new roof membrane.
- TURNER HALL – CLASSROOM RENOVATIONS The project will renovate existing Turner Hall spaces to provide of state-of-the-art instructional laboratories and classrooms with support facilities for the study of crops and soils as well as life safety and HVAC improvements.
STEAM REFEED TO GREENHOUSES Extend steam and condensate services from the current steam tunnel location on the south side of Peabody Drive to the Turner Hall Greenhouses. - MCKINLEY HEALTH CENTER – WINDOWS REPLACEMENT Fifty-five double-hung windows in building “C” will be removed and replaced with new energy efficient aluminum clad wood thermally-sealed double glazed sashes.
- KRANNERT ART MUSEUM – MULTIPLE BUILDING ELEVATOR UPGRADES The full modernization of elevators and components will meet or exceed State of Illinois code requirements complete with firefighters service operation.
- EDUCATION BUILDING – PLAZA REPAIRS North entry stairs and the plaza will be renovated and repaired to address water infiltration and general deterioration of site elements. AHU MODIFICATIONS Existing AHU #9 will be removed. Auditorium 0002 will be converted over to AHU #2 and a new Variable Air Volume box will be installed off the system to serve this space. This transition will provide for greater energy conservation.
- AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING SCIENCES BUILDING – PAINT SOUTH VESTIBULE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR The project will include interior painting of the south vestibule and tack welding of the back side of the four exposed metal pan stairs treads to risers. The exterior of the south vestibule will also be painted and two large flat slab-on-grade concrete pavement sidewalk pieces replaced to the proper sloped sidewalks to allow for accessibility enhancements. FOOD SCIENCE AND HUMAN NUTRITION PILOT PROCESSING PLANT Exhaust fans will be added for humidity control and filtration. - ACTIVITIES AND RECREATION CENTER – PAINTING PROJECT Painting and patching walls throughout the facility. COURT FLOOR REPLACEMENT The existing wood athletic flooring in gyms 2 and 3 will be changed with new wood floor systems. - LAW BUILDING – LEGAL CLINIC REMODELING & EXPANSION The space currently used by the College of Law’s legal clinic will double to approximately 2900 GSF by remodeling space currently occupied by library stacks.
- NATURAL RESOURCES BUILDING – MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS PHASE II Project work will include new finishes, partitions, accessories, lighting and plumbing fixtures. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades will occur along with code compliance updates and potential reconfiguration of the restrooms.
- INTEGRATED BIOPROCESSING RESEARCH LABORATORY (IBRL)
The IBRL will facilitate multi-disciplinary research for chemical, biological, and physical conversion of renewable feed stocks to biofuels and other value-added products. This project will assist in scaling up processes from the laboratory using an integrated small-scale pilot plant facility. Once complete, the IBRL will help enable innovative research to market application and commercial products. For more information: http://bioenergy.illinois.edu/ - MEMORIAL STADIUM – MASONRY RESTORATION & REPAIRS PHASE III Masonry repair and restoration of the east parapet walls of Memorial Stadium will occur. The work includes the interior and exterior face of the parapet wall grinding and pointing, lifting and reinstalling the limestone coping with anchorage and through wall flashing, cornice joint repairs, replacement of the gutter and downspout system, and cleaning of the limestone cornice and coping stones. REPLACE CARPET Carpet tiles and wall base will be replaced in the Colonnades Room, 77 Club, and University Club. NW TRAINING AREA REMODELING The project will re-purpose the existing training area in the northwest corner of the facility to provide four-to-six private mental health rooms for student-athletes and an office for the head physician.
- PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE RESIDENCE HALLS – RESTROOM RENOVATIONS PHASE II The present multi-user restroom space on each floor of the Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls (Blaisdell and Carr) will be converted to eight single-use restrooms within the existing footprint of the present restroom space. This renovation will provide University Housing with the flexibility to assign floors on a coeducational basis. This renovation will also provide the residents with improved privacy, comfort, and accessibility.
- FLORIDA AVENUE RESIDENCE HALLS – OGLESBY HALL HVAC PIPING AND EXHAUST SYSTEM UPGRADES The project will replace piping for student rooms on floors 1-12 and upgrade of the exhaust system serving the core of the residence hall, including the installation of an energy recovery wheel.
- BIELFELDT ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION BUILDING – CARD ACCESS SYSTEM The project will provide new card access systems for the exterior access doors at the Bielfeldt Athletic Administration Building. Select interior doors will also be included as part of this work.
- ATKINS TENNIS CENTER – CARD ACCESS SYSTEM The project will provide new card access systems for the exterior access doors at Atkins Tennis Center. Select interior doors will also be included as part of this work.
- VETERINARY MEDICINE – BASIC SCIENCES BUILDING – COLLABORATIVE LEARNING SPACE Current library space will be repurposed as a collaborative learning space by the College of Veterinary Medicine. Two existing classrooms will be remodeled to innovative teaching spaces with new finishes, furnishings, and technology. LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES The improvements will work together to enhance the life safety levels through the installation of fire alarm systems and upgrades to various components.
Campus Street, Parking Lot and Infrastructure Construction
- MCORE PROJECT 3
White Street, from Second Street to Wright Street, will be reconstructed with a primary focus on improving the roadway for bus and bike traffic. The sidewalks will be reconstructed and street trees maintained. Transit stops will be consolidated to improve the flow through the corridor. The roadway will be redesigned to safely accommodate all users—pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, buses, and cars.
- MCORE PROJECT 2
The third phase of the Green Street Streetscape project focuses on the portion of Green Street from Fourth Street to Neil Street. Work started on the west half of the intersection of First Street at Green Street. First Street traffic will be limited to one-way southbound between Healey Street and Daniel Street. Businesses are open during construction and access to properties will be maintained via alternative routes.
- MCORE PROJECT 1
This section of Green Street between Wright Street and Busey Avenue is part of a critical and historic transportation link between downtown Urbana the heart of Campustown, which is under the jurisdiction of the City of Urbana. This renovation serves to move a high number of pedestrians, bicycles, buses and other vehicles through the heart of this academic and historic portion of the University of Illinois campus.
- OUTDOOR CENTER AND COMPLEX FIELDS – FENCE REPLACEMENT
The existing fence will be replaced on both turf fields at the university’s outdoor center with new 8’ high Ameristar fencing. New 8’ high chain link fencing will replace the aging 6’ high fence at the fields at Lincoln and Florida.
TURF REPLACEMENT The artificial turn on the center and south fields along Stadium Drive will be removed and replaced. This work will include regrade and repair of the aggregate sub-base, and installation of artificial turf with permanent striping.
- PARKING LOT E9 & BIELFELDT DRIVE – SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS
Lot E9 will be milled and resurfaced with asphalt. Concrete pavement will be added around drains and at select areas in the drive aisles. The entire driveway to Bielfeldt Athletic Administration Building will be reconstructed with concrete pavement and new subgrade to better withstand the buses that drive and park near the building.
- ORCHARD DOWNS – ORCHARD STREET ROADWAY IMPROVEMENT
Orchard Street and a section of Hazelwood Drive will be reconstructed. Orchard Street south of George Huff Drive, will be reconstructed on stabilized subbase with a new wider concrete pavement that will add two bike lanes. The Orchard Street and Hazelwood Drive north of George Huff Drive will be milled and resurfaced with asphalt. Housing parking lots D and G will be milled and resurfaced with asphalt.
- THE CITY OF CHAMPAIGN – ASPHALT PROJECT
The first phase of work will take place on First Street from St. Mary’s Road to Kirby Avenue. Work on First Street will consist of curb replacement, milling off the existing asphalt surface, paving two layers of new asphalt, and applying new pavement markings. The road will be closed to through traffic and will be completed by June 23, 2017.

SOUTH FARMS – RETRACTABLE ROOF GREENHOUSE
The project will support research work being performed at the SoyFace research farm. A retractable roof and walls greenhouse is needed for specific research that simulates drought conditions or variable moisture conditions in the field. The retractable roof and walls feature will allow enclosure of the structure during select rain events. Subplots will be utilized within the greenhouse itself for further isolated conditions in test plots. CERL has been an affiliated agency with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1967 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers co-located CERL with the university. CERL was created to support a growing military construction (i.e. buildings) program in the corps of engineers. The new facility will provide approximately 20,000 GSF of additional offices to the complex. This new facility will be constructed as an addition between the two main buildings on the CERL campus. The office space provided by the new building will allow one of the main buildings to transition back into research laboratory space. FARBER DRIVE ENTRANCE RECONSTRUCTION
The east entrance to CERL from Faber Drive will be reconstructed for improved drainage. Work will include relocating inlets, regrading of the side slopes, and traffic control.WEST SIDE VISITOR PARKING
Construction of a new visitor lot will include approximately 29 parking spaces. The lot will be located between the Newmark Drive right-of-way and the west walls of buildings 1 and 2.
