Summer Construction 2018

Substantial completion of Everitt Laboratory and construction activities for the Siebel Center for Design at Illinois, the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, the Illinois Street Residence Hall Dining Facility renovation and addition, Illinois Football Performance Center, and MCORE Project highlight the more than 50 capital improvement projects transforming the Urbana campus this summer.

The group of projects will also feature restroom remodels, HVAC enhancements, roof replacements, LED upgrades, and classroom and laboratory modernizations. Working with professional services consultants and campus stakeholders, F&S develops May-August construction phasing for campus facility and infrastructure projects when practical to minimize potential inconveniences for students, faculty, and staff.

1. NORTH CAMPUS PARKING DECK-WATERPROOFING 2ND & 3RD LEVELS
This project will include surface preparation and application of a waterproofing membrane on portions of the 2nd and 3rd levels of the North Campus Parking Deck.

EAST ELEVATOR GLAZING REPLACEMENT
This project shall replace existing exterior glazing and replace with low-E glazing.

2. ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING (ECE) BUILDING – STRUCTURAL MODIFICATION
The 235,000 GSF facility for the Electrical and Computer Engineering department will integrate instruction and research. This project is to reinforce structural steel members in the building for the future placement of a rooftop solar array.

3. NEWMARK CIVIL ENGINEERING BUILDING – LIFE SAFETY AND ELEVATOR UPGRADES
AFMFA funding will be used to upgrade an elevator. The major areas of work include, but are not limited to, modernization of elevator cab and equipment; electrical power feeds and rewiring; HVAC upgrades for machine rooms; Plumbing work as required; and painting.

LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
As one of four buildings in a multiple building life safety project, AFMFA student contributions will be used to replace the existing fire alarm system, with a new “addressable” fire alarm system.

4. EVERITT LABORATORY RENOVATION – BIOENGINEERING GRAINGER ENGINEERING BREAKTHROUGHS INITIATIVE
Work will continue on the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative, which is renovating the building to become the home for the Department of Bioengineering. During May and June, the site work and landscaping work will be completed.  Construction fencing will be removed shortly thereafter and the area returned for campus use. The renewal of the facility includes the creation of 11,000 GSF of new research area and associated support space. Upgrades to the aging HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems will be made. A new roof, widows, and doors will be installed and exterior masonry, concrete, and stone work will take place. 5. MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING BUILDING – HVAC UPGRADES FY16-17
Work to replace existing air handling units and provide new controls and connections to the campus chilled water loop. The project is being funded in part by AFMFA student contributions.

6. SEITZ MATERIALS RESEARCH LABORATORY – ENERGY PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING
In July 2015, the Board of Trustees approved Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) identified and designed during the Investment Grade Audit for five College of Engineering buildings (Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, Loomis Laboratory, Engineering Sciences Building, and Superconductivity Center). Energy Services Group, LLC was contracted as the ESCO. Construction on this approximately $41M project began in January 2016 with substantial completion of the entire project expected by July 2018 (Work on the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory is substantially complete). 

7. DANIELS HALL – ROOF REPLACEMENT
The project will replace the existing roof on the seven-story building including the elevator penthouse. The work will include replacement of insulation required to meet the building code and include base flashing, edge flashing, edge metal trim and other accessories necessary for making this a complete and water tight roof replacement.

8. FRED TURNER STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING – RESTROOM RENOVATIONS
This project will renovate to upgrade existing restrooms on the 3rd floor of the building.

9. ILLINI UNION – DINING SERVICES
During the construction of the new Illinois Street Residence Hall dining facility, temporary dining and kitchen facilities will be constructed at the Illini Union using the existing ballroom, the Colonial Room and Room 104 for dining areas, along with kitchen and support facilities on the lower level and first and second floors. Additionally, the existing loading dock on the northeast corner of the building will be removed and replaced with a wider loading ramp and dock that ties into the MCORE improvements made to the front of the Illini Union and Green Street in 2017.

WINDOW AND DOOR REPLACEMENT PHASE I
Existing exterior windows and doors, including window treatments, will be removed and replaced in the Colonial Room, Room 104, Corridor C100C, and the ballroom.

10. BURRILL HALL – MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY CENTER FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING & INSTRUCTION
Nearly 17,000 GSF of vacated library space will be updated for future instruction and advisement needs. Work includes interior demolition, new partitions and finishes, mechanical infrastructure upgrades for heating and cooling/air quality, and electrical updates to support power and tele data. The new roof top Air Handling Unit has been installed with startup and testing will beginning in May. Substantial completion with all commissioning activities will be complete in early July.



ISR Dining Facility – Renovation & Addition

11. ILLINOIS STREET RESIDENCE HALL (ISR) DINING FACILITY – RENOVATION & ADDITION
The project includes increasing the facility’s dining space by more nearly 36,000 GSF to serve 1,179 residents as well as visitors. The dining building will also provide meeting, group study, recreational, lab, and library space. Construction activities for the new dining facility are anticipated to last two years.  During this time, dining services for ISR residents will be provided at the Illini Union (See the Illini Union – Dining Services project).

12. SHERMAN HALL – FIVE STORY BUILDING ROOF REPLACEMENT
The roof will be replaced on the residential building, connector buildings, and the lobby.

REPLACE BRICK PATIO
Brick pavers, grout, setting bed, and waterproof membrane will be replaced down to the concrete structured deck. A new drainage system will address water runoff.

13. SPEECH & HEARING CLINIC – LAB RENOVATION
More than 5,000 GSF of second-floor space formerly used by the Speech-Language Pathology Clinic will be renovated into research laboratories, a large meeting/conference room, and office space to address growth in faculty numbers. On the first floor, the project includes restroom modernizations and the repurposing of 1,700 GSF for administrative offices, a reception area, and instructional space.  The work also includes an elevator upgrade and AHU replacement.

14. PSYCHOLOGY LABORATORY – ELEVATOR UPGRADES
AFMFA funding will be used to upgrade three elevators. The major areas of work include, but are not limited to, modernization of elevator cab and equipment; electrical power feeds and rewiring; HVAC upgrades for machine rooms; Plumbing work as required; and painting.

15. ENGLISH BUILDING – SLATE ROOF REPLACEMENT
The existing slate roof will be replaced with a new slate roof matching the original slate material. The project is being funded by AFMFA student contributions.

16. NOYES LABORATORY – WEST CLASSROOM RENOVATION
The west wing of Noyes Laboratory will be renovated to create flexible learning classrooms. Additional work includes remodeled restrooms, new windows and exterior doors, life safety upgrades, and the replacement of window air conditioning with new HVAC units to the campus chilled water system.

17. MEDICAL SCIENCES BUILDING – ANATOMY LAB RENOVATION
The Carle Illinois College of Medicine will renovate two existing laboratories for a new laboratory space; to house four cadaver stations and an equipment process room for cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment. Each cadaver station will accommodate eight students and be equipped with video monitors, overhead surgery exam lights, overhead video cameras and a cadaver dissection table.

SMALL GROUP LEARNING TEAM ROOMS
Existing space will be retrofitted and renovated to provide clinical and engineering small team-based learning environments by creating eight small-group learning team rooms, support resource areas, and library offices for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine

18. SCHOOL OF LABOR & EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS – CLASSROOM ADDITION
This project included the addition of seminar-style teaching space, a smaller classroom, and renovations to the building’s main entrance. Accessibility will be improved with the construction of new toilets and support spaces for the additions. Updates to the outdoor terrace also are included.

19. GREGORY HALL – LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
As one of four buildings in a multiple building life safety project; AFMFA student contributions will be used to upgrade the fire alarm system and the automatic fire suppression system.

20. FOELLINGER AUDITORIUM – LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
A fire suppression system, fire alarms, emergency lighting, and exit signage will be upgraded.

21. SMITH MEMORIAL HALL – INFRASTRUCTURE AND LIFE SAFETY PHASE II
This is the second phase of an infrastructure and life safety project.  The majority of the work performed during the summer will be interior renovation work. Exterior work twill include a new water service and new electrical service, as well as an emergency generator and electrical transformer installation. The corner of Mathews Avenue and Nevada Street will be busy with construction activities for both Smith Hall and the Bruce Nesbit African American Cultural Center projects.



Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center

22. BRUCE D. NESBITT AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER
Construction will continue on a new two-and-a-half-story building, which will include offices, a conference room, kitchen, music/dance room, computer lab, and social gathering space.

23. AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES – ETHNIC STUDIES FACILITY REPAIRS
The project will replace an existing, exterior exposed wood egress stairway from the third floor with exterior steel stairs.  The new configuration will also capture a new egress route out of the second floor and discharge both floors onto grade at the rear of the building.

24. MUSIC BUILDING- ROOF REPLACEMENT
The Music Building roof replacement project includes permanent masonry replacement/ repair on upper sections of the elevator tower, the replacement of all flat roofs, and the addition of roof insulation to meet current energy codes. The project is being funded in part with AFMFA student contributions.

25. BUSEY HALL – SLATE ROOF REPLACEMENT
The existing slate roof will be replaced with a new slate roof matching the original slate material. The project is part of auxiliary facilities system repair and restoration.

26. ARMORY BUILDING – SOUTH EXTERIOR ENVELOPE & FLOORS 1 AND 2 OFFICE REMODELING
Air and moisture infiltration deficiencies will be remedied in addition to installing a new AHU. Damaged walls, surface repairs, painting, ceilings, flooring, lighting, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) door hardware and signage also will be addressed. The project is being funded in part with AFMFA fees.

LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
The work includes new sprinklers and the replacement of replace non-rated doors and hardware.

27. LIBRARY AIR CONDITIONING CENTER CHILLER PLANT – CHILLERS 5 AND 6 REPLACEMENT
Two chillers will be replaced, and piping and electrical lines will be reconfigured.

28. MAIN LIBRARY – ELEVATOR UPGRADES
AFMFA funding will be used to upgrade two elevators. The major areas of work include, but are not limited to, modernization of elevator cab and equipment; electrical power feeds and rewiring; HVAC upgrades for machine rooms; Plumbing work as required; and painting.

29. BEVIER HALL – INFRASTRUCTURE RENOVATION PHASE II
Work will continue on building infrastructure renovations. This phase includes mechanical and electrical systems updates. The project is being funded by AFMFA student contributions.

30. FREER HALL – POOL INFILL RENOVATION
Removal of the 1968 link and the pool building will be complete in preparation for new construction starting in the fall.  Air handling units have begun installation in the attic space of the Pool Building.

31. HUFF HALL – CLASSROOM 112 RENOVATION
The project will upgrade interior finishes, furnishings, replacement and limited audio-visual equipment and electrical infrastructure in this lecture hall in May.

 LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
A fire suppression system, fire alarms, emergency lighting, and exit signage will be upgraded in the Armory, Huff Hall, and Foellinger Auditorium.



Siebel Center for Design at Illinois

32. SIEBEL CENTER FOR DESIGN AT ILLINOIS
This project is to construct a new 60,000 GSF design center facility in central campus. The center will be the point of convergence where the campus community discusses, questions, thinks, gets inspired, dreams, conceptualizes, invents, creates, and innovates. The design center will convene people and immerse them in meaningful challenges for which they design solutions. https://designcenter.illinois.edu/

33. BUSINESS INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITY – 4TH FLOOR OFFICE ADDITION
A building addition will be constructed on the existing green roof area west of existing fourth floor offices.

34. ARCHITECTURE BUILDING – RESTROOM RENOVATION (3RD AND 4TH FLOORS)
Renovate existing restrooms 303a and 405 in May.  The work will include new finishes, partitions, accessories, lighting and plumbing fixtures as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades, and code compliance updates

RICKER LIBRARY FLOORING REPLACEMENT AND CORRIDOR PAINTING
The flooring replacement project will extend the checkerboard pattern flooring into the library, replacing the brown battleship linoleum. 

35. MUMFORD HALL – HVAC UPGRADES FY16-17
Work to replace existing air handling units and provide new controls and connections to the campus chilled water loop. The project is being funded in part by AFMFA student contributions.

LECTURE HALL 103 RENOVATION
The project will upgrade interior finishes, furnishings, limited modification of existing lower risers for tiered seating, replacement & upgrade of limited audio-visual equipment and electrical infrastructure.

ELEVATOR UPGRADES
AFMFA funding will be used to replace or upgrade elevators. The major areas of work include, but are not limited to, modernization of elevator cab and equipment; electrical power feeds and rewiring; HVAC upgrades for machine rooms; Plumbing work as required; and painting.

36. TURNER HALL – CLASSROOM RENOVATIONS
The Turner Hall Classroom Renovation project will renovate selected existing building areas within the facility to provide state of the art instructional laboratories and classrooms for the study of soils and crops. The north annex exterior courtyard will be enclosed to make an atrium lounge and gathering area.  Life safety, Deferred Maintenance, and HVAC improvements will be provided in these areas as well.

37. PARKING LOT F29 -WATERPROOFING 3RD LEVEL AND RAMPS
This project will include surface preparation and application of a waterproofing membrane on portions of the ramps and the 3rd level of the Lot F29 Parking Deck at the corner of Dorner and Gregory Drives.

38. STOCK PAVILION – SOUTH ENTRY DRIVE
This project shall upgrade the south entry drive with new pedestrian and vehicular friendly paver plaza.  New landscaping and exterior window painting will accompany improvements.

39. AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING SCIENCES BUILDING – LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
As one of four buildings in a multiple building life safety project, AFMFA student contributions will be used to replace the existing fire alarm system, with a new “addressable” fire alarm system.

40. NATIONAL SOYBEAN RESEARCH CENTER – INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY, ENGERY, AND ENVIRONMENT CLASSROOM AND MEDIA LAB
Existing wet and dry laboratory space will be repurposed to build an innovation “collaborator” – a media communications lab/video recording studio, and open-shared office space for visiting scholars or post-doctoral fellows. icap.sustainability.illinois.edu

Illinois Football Performance Center

41. MEMORIAL STADIUM – RENOVATION AND FOOTBALL PERFORMANCE CENTER
Construction of the new performance center at the northeast corner of Memorial Stadium, adjacent to the indoor practice facility, will continue. The facility will house football team rooms, locker room, sports medicine area, strength training areas, and offices.

WEST SIDE CARPET REPLACEMENT IN PREMIUM SEATING AREAS
The project will replace the carpet in the Colonnades Room on the 3rd floor, media areas on the 8th floor, the suites and working booths on the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th floors. The work will also extend to smaller rooms, entrances, and bathrooms within the premium seating areas. Seating removal and re-installation will be required to replace the carpet in the suites.

MASONRY RESTORATION & REPAIRS PHASE IV
Masonry repairs and restoration continued with work of the west parapet walls of the stadium.

42. TRELEASE HALL AND FLORIDA AVENUE RESIDENCE HALL  – DINING HALL HVAC, PIPING, AND EXHAUST SYSTEM UPGRADES
The project includes replacement of HVAC piping, upgrade of the building exhaust system, and replacement of the kitchen ventilation and exhaust system components.

43. STATE FARM CENTER – LIGHTING AND CONTROLS
Update theatrical light in addition to a lighting control board allowing all of the building lighting to function as one cohesive unit.

44. ATKINS TENNIS CENTER – SCOREBOARD REPLACEMENT
Replace existing tennis scoreboard, networked with individual court scoreboards, and handheld receivers. New software and control panels will also be replaced in order to work with a new display system. Sufficient power will be added and a control room/closet will be added for new equipment.

LED LIGHTING REPLACEMENT
The project will replace the existing lighting in the playing areas with new high efficiency LED lighting to meet the Big Ten conference requirements for event lighting.

45. EICHELBERGER FIELD/ MARTIN SOFTBALL COMPLEX – TURF REPLACEMENT
This project will remove the existing turf and grass areas at the infield along with the base lines and behind home plate, and replace them with artificial turn that will provide wear resistance and durability.

46. DEMIRJIAN INDOOR GOLF FACILITY – LED LIGHTING
The project will replace the existing main lighting with LED lights in the large putting/chipping area and smaller surrounding rooms. This would include the product and installation.

47. VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL – LINEAR ACCELERATOR ADDITION
The College of Veterinary Medicine will construct a new radiation treatment suite, and vault to house a new linear accelerator radiation unit and contain the radiation The construction is necessary to update the teaching hospital’s radiation treatment program.

PHARMACY RENOVATION
This project will transform rooms E-186 through E-196 into a new pharmacy. The renovated space will address new regulatory requirements regarding sterile compounding and handling of hazardous drugs, which go into effect in July 2018.

48. VETERINARY MEDICINE – BASIC SCIENCES BUILDING – LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
As one of four buildings in a multiple building life safety project, AFMFA student contributions will be used to upgrade the fire alarm system and install a new building-wide automatic fire suppression system.

Multimodal Corridor Enhancement (MCORE) Project

A. MCORE PROJECT 3
White Street, from Second Street to Wright Street, will be reconstructed with a primary focus on improving the roadway for bus and bike traffic. The sidewalks will be reconstructed and street trees maintained. Transit stops will be consolidated to improve the flow through the corridor. The roadway will be redesigned to safely accommodate all users—pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, buses, and cars.

B. MCORE PROJECT 2
The third phase of the Green Street Streetscape project focuses on the portion of Green Street from Fourth Street to Neil Street. Work started on the west half of the intersection of First Street at Green Street. First Street traffic will be limited to one-way southbound between Healey Street and Daniel Street.  Businesses are open during construction and access to properties will be maintained via alternative routes.  A map depicting general timing of the project phases is available on the City of Champaign’s website.

C. MCORE PROJECT 1
This section of Green Street between Wright Street and Busey Avenue is part of a critical and historic transportation link between downtown Urbana the heart of Campustown, which is under the jurisdiction of the City of Urbana. This renovation serves to move a high number of pedestrians, bicycles, buses and other vehicles through the heart of this academic and historic portion of the University of Illinois campus.

D. PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE
Road improvements will occur on Pennsylvania Avenue from Fourth Street to just past Sixth Street. The project includes full street reconstruction, sidewalk improvements & curb ramp/ADA improvements.

E. PARKING LOT F25 – RESURFACING AND LIGHT REPLACEMENT
This project shall resurface and restripe the parking lot, install LED lighting, an install 1 ADA stall in Lot F25 north of the Large Animal Clinic.

2009 SOLAR DECATHLONG HOUSE – RELOCATION
The project will provide a new permanent location for the 2009 Solar Decathlon House which will be located from its prior temporary location near the I Hotel to a new permanent site adjacent to the EGBI Farm Shed complex on South Race Street in Urbana.
        
ALLERTON PARK – MAIN ENTRANCE RECONSTRUCTION
The work will refine the Allerton master plan design for an expanded roadway from old timber up to the mansion This upgrade will allow guests to drop off luggage and other guests through use of a circular drive. There will also be a connection to the existing parking lot so that after arrival and check in, guests will be able to move their vehicles into the parking lot. Pedestrian and ADA access will be enhanced with new walkways and improvements to the ADA parking lot to the northwest of the mansion. The main roadway will receive new pedestrian lighting and landscaping and he existing main parking lot will be improved with a new connection to the new entry road.
