Initial construction activities for Phase 4 of the Altgeld Hall Renovation and Illini Hall Replacement Project started on Wednesday, July 1, after the Illinois Capital Development Board issued an authorization to proceed to Williams Brothers Construction, Inc.
Mobilization and site preparations for the comprehensive interior renovations of Altgeld Hall are already underway, and additional construction will commence on-site in the weeks ahead. The scope of work includes a complete modernization of spaces throughout the facility, including a full upgrade of the east wing addition, enhanced accessibility features, and the restoration of the building’s original murals.
Phase 2, exterior renovations to Altgeld Hall, were substantially completed last year as a precursor to this work. That project provided comprehensive envelope improvements, including masonry revitalization of the facility’s sandstone facade and various wall and floor improvements. Additionally, the iconic bell tower received structural upgrades, a new spire roof, and enhancements to the chimes system.
Periodic John Street Closures Occurring
Structural steel deliveries for the construction of a new facility on the site of the former Illini Hall (Phase 3) are ongoing, and the material dropoffs will necessitate periodic closures of John Street over the next several months. While truck deliveries are in progress, project team members will act as flaggers on Wright Street to temporarily reroute westbound traffic to Chalmers Street.
Thanks for always slowing down, staying alert, and giving crews plenty of room to perform their work when traveling through or near construction zones.
