Steve Bainbridge has been named the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds (BMG).

Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce that Steve Bainbridge has been named the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds (BMG), effective Sunday, March 30. Steve has served in the interim role since November 2024, helping the division strengthen relationships with stakeholders across campus for service work and improvements to the physical environment.
He has significant facilities management experience, with over 30 years of service in maintenance and construction organizations at the U. of I. and in the private sector.
Steve joined F&S as an electrician in 2005 and became shop foreperson in 2010. He spent 12 years leading the Electricians Shop before being promoted to Superintendent of Building Maintenance in 2022. In these positions and as interim director, his expertise and dedication have helped to advance a wide range of responsive and reliable maintenance activities focused on improving cost efficiency, delivering innovative practices, and raising customer satisfaction.
Steve has also lent his collaborative spirit and energy to many F&S and campus initiatives, such as the Abbott Power Plant biphasic carbon capture project, Technology Services’ wireless expansion projects, and campus lighting conversions to LEDs. He is a member of the F&S Strategic Planning Committee, developing future goals and objectives for the unit’s forthcoming strategic plan. Previous volunteer involvement has included leading the F&S Diversity & Inclusion Committee, serving as a Campus Charitable Fund Drive unit leader, and participating in various community outreach events. For his efforts, in 2020, he was recognized by his peers for his outstanding contributions to the university, receiving the Chancellor’s Distinguished Staff Award for excellence in civil service performance and promotion of positive morale.
Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in technical resource management from Southern Illinois University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Illinois Springfield. He is one of many F&S veterans, serving in the US Air Force and Illinois Air National Guard. He is also a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA); the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); and the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS). He is an Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) Certified Educational Facilities Professional and a certificate earner of the University of South Florida’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace program.
Please join me in congratulating Steve on his appointment!
