Spill Containment Exercise

Sep 12, 2023 | 3:07 pm

Mock Scenario Starts at 8 a.m.

The Boneyard Creek features a biodegradable green dye used during a previous spill containment exercise.

F&S, the Division of Public Safety, and the Champaign Fire Department will conduct a spill containment exercise on Thursday, September 28. The drill will occur between 8 and 10 a.m., beginning with a simulated call to 911.

To represent an oil spill during this year’s mock scenario, event organizers will place dye in the storm drains around Abbott Power Plant, near the intersection of South Oak Street and Armory Avenue. The dye will then travel northward along storm sewers connected to the Boneyard Creek and areas downstream.

The exercise is required annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and satisfies Abbott Power Plant’s Facility Response Plan requirements. More information about spill response is available on the F&S website.

Thanks for your help in sharing this information with students, faculty, and staff who may be located nearby during the exercise. For questions, please contact Compliance Professional Bill Walsh wwalsh@illinois.edu, 217-300-7707
