University bike sharing partner Veo is expected to return 750 bicycles (Class 2 e-bikes) to Champaign-Urbana this month. The company removes its entire local fleet for upkeep when ridership significantly decreases over the winter. The bicycles will be active 24/7, although the company may temporarily reduce the fleet size in anticipation of severe weather or other circumstances as necessary.
GEOFENCING AND SLOW-RIDE ZONES
All Veo bikes operate with geofencing technology, enforcing designated slow-ride zones on the Main Quad, Engineering Quad, South Quad, Ikenberry Commons, University of Illinois Arboretum, and other select areas of the Urbana campus. Riders are reminded that when using motorized rental bikes, GPS tracking will limit the throttle capabilities in these locations but will continue to allow complete pedaling support.
REPORTING AN IMPROPERLY PARKED CLASS 2 E-BIKE
If you see an improperly parked Veo bicycle on campus, especially a bike that should be immediately moved because it blocks a sidewalk, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp, facility entrance, curb cut, crosswalk, or driveway, please email Veo operations with a picture and exact location of the bike needing to be moved. All Veo bicycles are numbered, which is also helpful when reporting a bike concern. Per the bike sharing agreement with the university and cities, Veo is responsible for addressing reported issues within three hours during peak times. However, some conditions may necessitate a more rapid response. You may also move a bicycle that has fallen over or is misplaced if you are able to do so.
BIRD ENDS BIKE SHARING PROGRAM AGREEMENT
Last August, Bird joined the campus bike sharing program, adding 500 Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes to the local fleet. The company recently ended its agreement with the university and will no longer offer service on campus and in the cities. The university remains committed to expanding the bike sharing program in the future and providing additional micromobility options to students, faculty, and staff through new partnerships.
