Work Stoppage Information and Custodial Services Contingency Planning

Sep 20, 2024 | 1:46 pm

F&S has developed operational contingency plans to address the impact of a potential work stoppage on custodial service delivery.

F&S has developed operational contingency plans to address the impact of a potential work stoppage on custodial service delivery. The possible unavailability of building service workers beginning as early as Sunday, September 22, means the immediate focus will be maintaining consistency of essential BSW services:

  • Locking and unlocking of university facilities
  • Stocking restrooms and classrooms with supplies
  • Cleaning and removing trash in public areas, such as hallways and restrooms
  • Monitoring trash containers for overflow inside of parking structures/lots

F&S supervisory staff not represented by a union will be requested to help contribute to and perform these core custodial operations.

“All in the Hall” Trash Pickup

No food or potentially odor-causing materials should be thrown away in offices or shared spaces where trash service will not occur. This action will support F&S waste management and recycling efforts in transitioning to a dedicated “All in the Hall” approach. All items should only be placed in public hallway container locations or outdoor waste and recycling receptacles as appropriate where pickup is sure to happen.

Updated Communication Protocols and Work Order Submittals

During a work stoppage, all departmental, college, and unit requests for custodial support should be submitted to the F&S Service Office fsserviceoffice@illinois.edu, 217-333-0340. Because BSW supervisors will directly perform various cleaning activities and still oversee the completion of daily assignments, typical engagement opportunities with Building Services leadership will be unavailable. If necessary, contact the Service Office to help establish temporary priorities or tasks at the building level for cleaning and disinfection activities. F&S anticipates a high volume of initial inquiries, and utilizing this process will expedite the review and response of those items as appropriate.

Typical work orders for other F&S shops and departments should continue to be submitted via the my.FS Portal. For urgent issues (e.g., gas odors, elevator entrapments), always call the F&S Service Office. After 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on weekends and designated campus holidays, calls will be transferred to the Division of Public Safety dispatch.

How Can I Help?

F&S appreciates your patience and assistance as the contingency plans are implemented. Your two-way communication and continuous feedback will be vital to launching these efforts, maintaining primary custodial services, and being responsive to emerging needs during this period. Thanks for your continued partnership in caring for the outstanding research and learning environments at the U. of I. The university continues negotiating in good faith and remains focused on reaching an agreement.
