Single-Use Mask Recycling

Started: 01/04/2020

Completed: 02/01/2023

This COVID-19 response strategy allowed students, faculty, and staff to recycle single-use face masks.

In 2020, in response to a rapid increase in disposable mask use, approximately 50 collection boxes were deployed across campus to help students, faculty, and staff recycle face coverings and keep them from entering the landfill stream. Recyclers were asked to put the masks in a sealed bag, place the bag into the box, and then sanitize or wash hands after completing the drop-off.

Facilities & Services collaborated with TerraCycle to recycle disposable masks across campus. The program was free to university departments and units, thanks to Student Sustainability Committee support.

In 2022, boxes were analyzed for their capacity levels and the type of content found within them. Due to a decline in single use masks on campus, the program ended in early 2023.
