FACILITY PROJECTS

  1. BECKMAN INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY – CAFÉ RENOVATION

The cafe at the Beckman Institute is an essential part of the interdisciplinary collaboration that the institute encourages. The cafe is now 30 years old and will be remodeled to meet current needs. The concept stays within the footprint of the existing café/kitchen while suggesting removal and rebuilding of the south wall of the cafe into the atrium, adding a ware washer to an office and existing catering on the south side of the atrium, updating all kitchen equipment while retaining the existing hood location, updating the seating options in the atrium, and increasing the light levels at the café seating area.

  1. NORTH CAMPUS PARKING DECK – TOP LEVEL FENCING

This project will install a self-harm prevention barrier or fence where there is at least an eight-foot height from the floor or the closest foothold to the top of the barrier. The work will also address any additional structural support or modifications needed to support retrofitted infrastructure.

  1. RICHMOND STUDIO – REMODEL

The project involves removing walls and potentially an existing restroom to reconfigure the space for a television studio, control room, recording booth, equipment storage, and a combined newsroom/classroom visible from the studio. An existing restroom will also be converted to an all gender restroom. The current studio would be adjusted to include a soundproof control room and upgraded lighting and infrastructure. This would create a newsroom/classroom space with an open design that promotes and enables collaboration. Students and faculty would work at computers organized in pods or stations that could be rearranged. The existing storage closet/recording booth would become a recording booth only. An equipment cage would be installed in the newsroom to accommodate the equipment storage needs. Mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing upgrades will also be completed as a part of this work.

  1. DIGITAL COMPUTER LABORATORY – STEAM SUPPLY AND CONDENSATE RETURN

This project will replace the steam supply and condensate return. All existing piping will be replaced with new materials. The work will be performed by F&S Crafts & Trades.

  1. ADVANCED COMPUTATION BUILDING – GENERATOR

The scope of the project is to upgrade two uninterruptable power systems (UPS) units that serve a data center managed by U of I Technology Services. The existing locations will be reused, requiring a rapid shutdown, removal, installation, and turn-up of the new UPS units. Replacing the existing UPS units is necessary to provide the capacity for current equipment loads. The construction work will be completed by F&S Crafts & Trades.

         STEAM AND CONDENSATE PIPING SUPPLY

Steam and condensate piping supply systems will be replaced at the Advanced Computation Building. All existing piping will be replaced with new materials. The work will be performed by F&S Crafts & Trades.

  1. AERODYNAMICS RESEARCH LABORATORY – STEAM SUPPLY AND CONDENSATE RETURN

This project will replace the steam supply and condensate return. All existing piping will be upgrade with new materials. The work will be performed by F&S Crafts & Trades.

  1. ILLINI HALL REPLACEMENT AND ALTGELD HALL RENOVATION PROJECT

Altgeld Hall exterior renovation work is underway with tuckpointing in specific locations. Phase two of this project will also include the structural reconstruction of the chimes’ player room and bell tower. The overall project shall provide the complete restoration of the existing Altgeld Hall and the replacement of the Illini Hall with a new facility to provide administrative and classroom space, as well as an innovative data science center. Investing in these spaces will benefit thousands of students and faculty members.  This project aims to completely restore Altgeld Hall to a level consistent with a world-class academic enterprise for the mathematics and statistics departments. All historical elements of the building will be identified and preserved as a part of this process. New mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, sprinkler and life safety systems, restrooms, and elevators will be provided, as well as structural, exterior envelope, and site modifications. Five separate Altgeld Hall renovation projects have been completed over time, and as a result, the building has numerous distinct levels connected by stairs or ramps. This project will improve accessibility by providing access to all building areas and minimizing the number of separate elevations. This renovation project will achieve LEED Silver, according to the U.S. Green Building Council guidelines.

The replacement of Illini Hall will provide a new world-class facility for mathematics and statistics departments. The building program will include an innovative data science center to connect the university’s data scientists with business, industry, and the community. This building will also provide administrative office and support spaces, multi-purpose gathering areas, and classrooms. This new building shall be minimum LEED Silver certified.  The decommissioning and removal of Illini Hall was completed this spring as part of phase one work.   1. NATURAL HISTORY BUILDING – ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

F&S high voltage electricians will replace outdated electrical load center equipment with new state-of-the-art, reliable equipment for the LC-21 site.

  1. CENTRAL CAMPUS PARKING STRUCTURES C7 & C10

The continuing upgrades for parking structures C7 and C10 include installing a supplemental steel beam support system to extend the lifecycle of the facilities. Additional scope items include repairs to concrete delamination and spalls, repairs and restorations to the building façade through the replacement of coping stones and flashing various brick repairs, installation of self-harm protection screening at the top level and all exterior above-grade openings on all levels of both structures, application of new waterproofing systems, and various stair repairs. Also, the C7 elevator will be restored, along with installing a new elevator in C10. Significant upgrades and maintenance to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems will take place.

  1. ILLINI UNION BOOKSTORE – TEMPERATURE CONTROL UPGRADES

Direct digital control upgrades will be provided in select locations of the facility to improve energy demand management response, including enhanced occupant scheduling opportunities.

  1. HENRY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING – STEAM TUNNEL REHABILITATION PHASE #3

This project shall repair sections of tunnel roofs, walls, and floors and repair pipe supports. Incidental waterproofing, electrical for lighting, and pipe insulation jacketing will be included at specific locations. Tunnel section repairs may be partial or full-depth repairs. Steam tunnel repairs are necessary to maintain the safety and reliability of steam delivery to the campus and the return of condensate to Abbott Power Plant.

  1. NOYES LABORATORY – ROOF REPLACEMENT

The comprehensive roof replacement project will add insulation as required to meet the current building code requirements, replace wet insulation, and raise the parapet height for the roof warranty. The work will also replace metal trim, counter flashing, and other metal accessories where damaged, replace metal flashing at the skylight, remove and replace the existing sealant at the stone coping joints, and raise the curbs under roof-mounted mechanical equipment as required to maintain the roof warranty. During this process, crews will also review other equipment and related performance aspects for future repair and replacement work.

  1. ROGER ADAMS LABORATORY – LIFE SAFETY AND RESTROOM RENOVATIONS

Roger Adams Laboratory has one of the highest levels of research activity and funding on the Urbana campus. A concerted effort has been made to upgrade sprinkler systems in all laboratory buildings at the university to provide a critical element of human safety and asset protection. This project will finish the partial sprinkler system installation completed in 2012 and include a new fire suppression system throughout the north side of the facility supplied by a fire pump in the Chemical & Life Sciences Laboratory. Additionally, related occupancy separations and north-to-south compartmentalization will be addressed by replacing passage doors with fire-rated units and panic bar exit hardware. Restroom upgrades will also be included in this project to continue the partial restroom initiative throughout the building started in 2013.

  1. KRANNERT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS (KCPA) – COLWELL PLAYHOUSE STAGE FLOOR REPLACEMENT

The KCPA’s existing wood-framed stage floors were installed as part of the original construction in 1969. Because of periodic water infiltration and typical wear, the stage floors are now in need of replacement.

  1. MUSIC BUILDING – NORTH ENTRANCE

This project will address issues with the concrete stairs and the plaza approach on the north side of the Music Building. The entire north/south stairs and gateway area will be upgraded, including new handrails. Existing benches shall be salvaged for potential reuse, and the new patio shall comprise permeable pavers. The accessible location near the approach will also be refurbished. The stairs that lead to the lower patio area will also be replaced. The landing and lower stair runs will be retained, but with new matching handrails. F&S Construction Services will coordinate the project.

  1. SMITH MEMORIAL HALL – ROOF REPLACEMENT

Roof replacement work at Smith Hall will address the low slope west roof area on the addition of the rehearsal area. F&S Construction Services will coordinate the project.

  1. ABBOTT POWER PLANT – STEAM TUNNEL REHABILITATION PHASE #3

This project shall repair sections of tunnel roofs, walls, and floors and repair pipe supports. Incidental waterproofing, electrical for lighting, and pipe insulation jacketing will be included at specific locations. Tunnel section repairs may be partial or full-depth repairs. Steam tunnel repairs are necessary to maintain the safety and reliability of steam delivery to the campus and the return of condensate to Abbott Power Plant. The work will extend from the intersection of Oak Street and Gregory Drive to First Street and Gregory Drive.

  1. UNDERGRADUATE LIBRARY – REDEVELOPMENT

The project will convert the Undergraduate Library into a facility to display and house elements of the university’s special collections and archival holdings. This will require modifying existing spaces, replacing building infrastructure, and adding a loading dock. The project for University Housing will deliver a guaranteed energy savings contract to be completed in conformance with the provisions of the public university energy conservation act. An energy services company (ESCO) has been selected through a request for proposal process to serve as a qualified provider. An investment-grade audit is used to develop the final scope prior to entering into an energy services agreement. Energy conservation measures will include various HVAC controls, window replacements, lighting, and water conservation measures.

  1. STEVEN S. WYMER HALL – NEW FACILITY

Set to open in 2025, this state-of-the-art building will help prepare Illinois students for futures of purpose and impact. A partnership between Gies Business and campus, this hybrid educational facility will be home to much-needed collaboration spaces, traditional and flexible classrooms, informal learning environments, content creation studios, as well as academic offices and support spaces. Gies Business will utilize the new facility to respond to their growing space needs, both on-campus and online, to deliver excellent, innovative undergraduate and graduate programs. The facility will be a collaborative interdisciplinary space available for use by other colleges with similar needs on the south end of campus, including but not limited to the College of Education and the College of Applied Health Sciences.   1. MEMORIAL STADIUM – EAST STANDS SANITARY AND STORM REPAIRS

The university will collaborate with a professional services consultant (PSC) to perform a study of the storm and sanitary sewers under the crawlspace of the east stands under Memorial Stadium. The study will also include coordination with the F&S plumbers and televising of the sanitary lines, reviewing records verifying existing conditions, and providing recommendations on options for a future repair schedule that would align with scheduled stadium activities and usage. F&S Construction Services will use the Job Order Contracting program to complete the work over the next two years.

This project will provide a new parking structure on the west half of the Lot E15 surface parking lot. The structure will replace parking removed from Lot E12 due to the new Steven S.   1. UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS FOUNDATION – NEW FACILITY

Construction of the new University of Illinois Foundation (UIF) Building in Research Park continues with crews performing framing and progressing to the building envelope. Once completed, the innovative center will celebrate the rich history of generosity at the University of Illinois, bring Foundation staff together from its two primary locations, and serve as a learning hub for the advancement community—all of which will help create an even brighter and altogether extraordinary future for the University of Illinois System. The University of Illinois Foundation is an independent Illinois not-for-profit membership corporation registered with the state of Illinois.   1. VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL/LARGE ANIMAL CLINIC– LOW-SLOPE ROOF REPLACEMENT

This project replaces low slope roofing over the Large Animal Clinic. The F&S roofers will coordinate with other shops to perform the replacement work.

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

  • ASPHALT PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS FY23

Complete asphalt improvements will be performed on streets within the university’s jurisdiction. The work will include evaluating existing pavement conditions, pavement /base/sub-base testing, curb and gutter evaluations/design, and curb ramps.

  • PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE (PCC) PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS FY23 – LINCOLN AVE FROM FLORIDA AVENUE TO HAZELWOOD DRIVE

Complete PCC improvements will be performed on streets within the university’s jurisdiction. The project will rehabilitate Pennsylvania Avenue from the city limit to Lincoln Avenue, Dorner Drive, and St. Mary’s Road from Oak Street to Fourth Street.

INFRASTRUCTURE

A. CONDENSATE RETURN LINE – MATHEWS AVENUE

Replace entire 6” condensate return line with PEX in the shallow tunnel running north/south along the west side of Mathews Street between Springfield Avenue and Boneyard Creek.

B. ILLINOIS STREET – STEAM TUNNEL REHABILITATION PHASE #3

This project shall repair sections of tunnel roofs, walls, and floors and repair pipe supports. Incidental waterproofing, electrical for lighting, and pipe insulation jacketing will be included at specific locations. Tunnel section repairs may be partial or full-depth repairs. C. FIRST STREET, OAK STREET, AND GREGORY DRIVE – STEAM TUNNEL REHABILITATION PHASE #3

This project shall repair sections of tunnel roofs, walls, and floors and repair pipe supports. Incidental waterproofing, electrical for lighting, and pipe insulation jacketing will be included at specific locations. Tunnel section repairs may be partial or full-depth repairs. Steam tunnel repairs are necessary to maintain the safety and reliability of delivery of steam to the campus and the return of condensate to Abbott Power Plant.

D. ILLINOIS FIELD AND ATKINS BASEBALL TRANING CENTER – BASEBALL PARKING LOT EXPANSION

The project will provide new concrete parking expansion to the existing lot at Illinois Field and the Atkins Baseball Training Center. The work will include grading, drainage, new drives, and parking areas, as well as landscaping. Parking lot lighting is also included in this work.

E. ASHTON WOODS – PARKING LOT AND DRIVE LANES

The repair and replacement of parking lot and driveways in Ashton Woods will upgrade pavement conditions and provide newer surfaces for increased safety when walking, driving, and parking.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) RIGHT-OF-WAY (ROW) – SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS

This project will address ADA ROW barriers on sidewalks and pavement in various locations across the campus. Areas for the work will include Gregory Drive, Peabody Drive, and the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES). The 2018 ADA Transition Plan Supplement reported reviewed the university-owned sidewalk network along public right of way as well as accessible routes connecting the public ROW to the accessible ramps and with the entrance to the 90 prioritized campus buildings. SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM – MULTIPLE CAMPUS LOCATIONS

5,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer piping will be lined in the following areas:

  • Campus area surrounded by Gregory Drive, Dorner Drive, and Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Water Survey Research Area surrounded by Gerty Drive, First Street, and Bailey Drive
  • Orchard Downs Residential Complex area
  • Dairy Cows area surrounded by Lincoln Avenue and Gerty Drive.

FIRE HYDRANT REPLACEMENTS
Six existing fire hydrants that have exceeded the expected service life will be replaced with five new hydrants, along Pennsylvania Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and Peabody Drive.

WILLARD AIRPORT – QUICK TURNAROUND RENTAL CAR WASH FACILITY

The project will construct a new quick turnaround airport rental car wash facility located in an area to the southeast of the existing rental car parking lot. The building will contain the following:

  • Three self-service wash bays.
  • A machine room.
  • A restroom facility.
  • An alternate bid for one automatic wash bay.

WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM – METER REPLACEMENTS

Nine water meters will be replaced in various locations across campus to support Utilities & Energy Services Energy Billing System and Energy Management Control Center energy conservation initiatives.
