Summer Construction 2015

Summer projects will provide accessibility improvements, laboratory remodels, updated facility infrastructure and building envelopes, enhanced energy efficiency, life safety features, and beautification of the campus grounds. Notable projects include Ikenberry Commons #3 Residence Hall, State Farm Center, and the Natural History Building.
The renovation of the Chemistry Annex is a part of the Instructional Space Improvement (ISI) initiative project funded by the Office of the Provost, colleges and departments, the Academic Facilities Maintenance Fund Assessment (AFMFA), and library and information technology fee. To date, approximately 113 classrooms have been upgraded by the ISI.
As much as practical, work on these major capital construction projects is timed for this period to minimize potential inconvenience to students, faculty, and staff. Several transportation network and utilities infrastructure improvements will necessitate street closures.

MULTIMODAL CORRIDOR ENHANCEMENT (MCORE) PROJECT UPDATE:
Planning continues for the MCORE Project to begin in fall 2016. MCORE will impact all modes of transportation in critical campus areas including Green Street, Armory Avenue, White Street, and Wright Street.
The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD), City of Champaign, City of Urbana, and university are partnering to improve mobility in the core of our community through MCORE.
ENERGY PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING (EPC)
EPC remains an integral component in the university’s energy reduction efforts, and in helping reduce the deferred maintenance (DM) backlog. Due to the Veterinary Medicine Energy Service Company (ESCO) project completed in FY13, approximately $20M in DM obligations were eliminated. Based in part on the success of the Vet Med ESCO, University Administration has granted approval to proceed with the next round of energy performance contracts for 20 facilities across the campus. The first round of projects, beginning this fall, involves five College of Engineering buildings (Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, Loomis Laboratory, Superconductivity Center, Engineering Sciences Building, Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory).

1. NEWMARK CIVIL ENGINEERING BUILDING – 4TH FLOOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY REMODEL
This project will provide the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with two state-of-the-art research and teaching spaces by renovating an area of the fourth floor.
2. DIGITAL COMPUTER LABORATORY (DCL) – MAIN ELECTRICAL SERVICE REPLACEMENT AND EMERGENCY LIGHTING UPGRADE
There are three electrical services in DCL. This project will replace a 54-year-old electrical service with a unit that is sized for all the volt loads in the building, except those in the 1990 addition. Life safety loads in this older part of the building will be connected to a new emergency generator.
3. MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING BUILDING – MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS
This project will renovate restroom facilities in five buildings: Freer Hall, Main Library, Materials Science and Engineering Building, Mumford Hall, and Noyes Laboratory. These facilities were identified as those in which restroom renovation efforts would provide significant benefit to campus due to volume of usage. Work will include extensive upgrades to existing restrooms and provide opportunities to repurpose existing spaces into restrooms in some facilities.
4. SEITZ MATERIALS RESEARCH LABORATORY – 4 ROOM BASEMENT LABORATORY REMODEL WITH PITS
Seitz Materials Research Laboratory adjacent basement rooms (b49, b51, b85, b89) will be converted into one large lab with three sound/vibration isolation pits of various shapes, each 6′ clear deep. The laboratory renovation will include the removal of four non-load-bearing walls; relocation and addition of entry doorways, cabinetry, finishes; required modifications to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and helium recovery, as well as upgrades to the compressed air and nitrogen systems.
5. AERODYNAMICS RESEARCH LABORATORY ADDITION
This project is a 4,200 GSF addition to the aerodynamics research lab (no. 1093). The work will extend the existing building east into the former location of the atmospheric research annex.
6. LOOMIS LABORATORY – ELECTRICAL UPGRADES
This electrical upgrade project will increase capacity and improve the condition of the Loomis Laboratory electrical system. Work will include the removal of abandoned chillers, pumps, and disconnected piping from the northeast corner of the facility. A new feeder system and transformer will be installed.
7. NATURAL HISTORY BUILDING (NHB) RENOVATION – DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
This project will be a comprehensive phased renovation plan and capital construction implementation for the NHB, which was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in November 1986 as part of the Nathan C. Ricker thematic district. The building serves the School of Earth, Society, and Environment and the School of Integrative Biology, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. 8. NOYES LABORATORY – MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS

9. MEDICAL SCIENCES BUILDING – LIFE SAFETY UPGRADES
The Medical Sciences Building is a 114,784 GSF, five-story building with basement and penthouse constructed in 1975. The facility contains classrooms, labs, offices, research labs, mechanical and support spaces for the College of Medicine. This project will upgrade the life safety systems in the building to current standards. Structural penetrations will be fire-stopped, exit signage updated, and miscellaneous life safety deficiencies addressed. Interior finishes and other ancillary components will be replaced as needed.
10. KRANNERT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS (KCPA) – EXTERIOR RENOVATIONS
This project will address the exterior of the Playhouse Theater and Studio Theater, including concrete masonry unit back-up and face brick reconstruction as well as cavity wall insulation. The integrity and appearance of these theaters will be improved along with increasing energy efficiency. Minor interior finish work will also be performed.
11. LEVIS FACULTY CENTER – ILLINOIS PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH IN THE HUMANITIES 4TH FLOOR REMODEL
The existing fourth floor of Levis Faculty Center will be remodeled. This project will include the removal of selected existing walls and the construction of new partitions to create new offices and an egress corridor for the existing large meeting room. Open office cubical partitions and work stations will be created as well. New technology, audio-visual equipment, and furnishings will be provided for the office spaces and the meeting rooms. The existing mechanical and electrical systems will be extended to service the newly remodeled spaces. New lightning will be provided in the developed spaces and selected existing areas. Fire alarm system upgrades will also be made.
12. SHERMAN HALL – ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT – PHASE 1
Two elevators in the 12-story tower of Sherman Hall will be modernized. The elevators have original equipment that is at least 40 years old. This is the first of a two-phased project for University Housing that will provide new cabs, controls, pumping unit, and fixtures for the two thirteen-stop elevators.
13. PSYCHOLOGY BUILDING – ROOF REPLACEMENT
This project will replace the roof system and remove equipment from the roof and penthouse mechanical rooms. This project will also address some of the skylights over the atrium and the associated interior areas.
14. CHEMISTRY ANNEX – ADDITION AND RENOVATION
The Chemistry Annex will receive a complete renovation of the existing 42,466 GSF facility and construction of a 9,600 GSF addition to the building on the southeast corner along Mathews Avenue. The project is a part of the ISI. The addition will address life safety and accessibility as well as provide more efficient circulation patterns.
15. DAVENPORT HALL – RESTROOM RENOVATION
This project will create a stack of men’s and women’s restrooms in the main building of Davenport Hall. The location of these restrooms will fit into the building master plan and help maximize the use of available plumbing in the facility.
16. MUSIC BUILDING – WAYFINDING AND LIFE SAFETY RENOVATIONS|
This project will develop an overall total building wayfinding identification system, interiors materials selection, and color palette. A phased installation will occur starting on the main entry street level with the improvement of the restroom facilities and main Nevada Street lobby entry area flooring and furniture. In addition, the building will receive an automatic fire suppression system on the lower level (first floor) and modern fire alarm system, as well as address other life safety issue installations.
17. CHEZ FAMILY FOUNDATION CENTER FOR WOUNDED VETERANS IN HIGHER EDUCATION
The Chez Family Foundation Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education will be a state-of-the-art facility combining 24-hour comprehensive support with academic programming to prepare wounded veterans to live independently and to successfully pursue their educational and career aspirations. The center will provide health and life skills management training, facilitated peer mentorship, academic tutoring, psychological and career counseling, rehabilitative services and employment services to the population of injured warriors returning from conflicts. 18. FOELLINGER AUDITORIUM – LIFE SAFETY DEFICIENCY CORRECTIONS
Improvements will be made to existing fire suppression, fire alarms, emergency lighting, and exit signage in priority areas of the buildings. Fire alarm systems will provide audible and visual notification throughout all applicable areas of the buildings, thereby allowing prompt notification of all occupants in the event of a fire related emergency. Exits will be properly isolated and upgraded to enhance their performance in the event of an emergency and to prevent smoke migration. Signage in the buildings will be upgraded to help provide rapid identification of exit routes in the building.
19. ABBOTT POWER PLANT – GAS BOILER REPLACEMENT
To maintain continued reliable steam production at Abbott Power Plant, replacement of the existing gas boilers will be phased in. Phase one of the project will be the replacement of gas boiler #4 (and potentially gas boiler #3) and associated systems. This work will help prepare Abbott power plant for subsequent boiler replacement projects.
BLACK START GENERATOR
This project will add diesel-powered generators, electrical distribution
paralleling equipment with protective devices, medium voltage cabling, and interconnects to Abbott Power Plant.
WINDOW REPLACEMENT AND MASONRY REPAIR
The exterior windows of Abbott Power Plant will be replaced. Areas of the exterior masonry will also be evaluated for repair.

22. BEVIER HALL – INFRASTRUCTURE RENOVATION – PHASE 1
During this phase of renovations, significant portion of the aging infrastructure (HVAC, electrical, and exterior envelope) of Bevier Hall will be replaced, focusing on the existing infrastructure located within the basement, first, and second floors. The work addresses current life safety code compliance issues, including adding fire suppression to the basement, first, and second floors and upgrading existing kitchen exhaust systems.
23. FREER HALL – ACCESSIBILITY IMPROVEMENTS DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
This project will provide improved accessibility into and throughout Freer Hall. The existing north and west entrances will be modified to create accessible entries into the building. Two interior ramps will be provided at the main north corridor level changes. An interior ramp will be provided off the west entrance lobby leading to the main corridor level. Also, the existing two-story ramp in the south portion of the building will be modified to provide an opening onto the main south corridor level.
MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS
This project will renovate restroom facilities in five buildings: Freer Hall, Main Library, Material Sciences and Engineering Building, Mumford Hall, and Noyes Laboratory. These facilities were identified as those in which restroom renovation efforts would provide significant benefit to campus due to volume of usage. Work will include extensive upgrades to existing restrooms and provide opportunities to repurpose existing spaces into restrooms in some facilities.
24. IKENBERRY COMMONS #3 RESIDENCE HALL
The new 504 beds, residence hall will be a 155,000 GSF building offering a combination of room configurations with common facilities. The exterior design of this new residence hall will reflect that of the first two residence halls, with similar proportions of brick, stone trim and glazing. All site-related work such as utilities, storm water, and landscaping are included as part of this project. The completion of a storm water detention system, in 2014, underneath the intramural fields located near First Street, was also a part of this project. LEED® Gold certification in progress for this facility.
25. HUFF HALL – LIFE SAFETY DEFICIENCY CORRECTIONS
Improvements will be made to existing fire suppression, fire alarms, emergency lighting, and exit signage in priority areas of the buildings. 26. DAVID KINLEY HALL (DKH) – EXTERIOR DOOR AND WINDOW REPLACEMENT – PHASE 2
This project will replace exterior windows at DKH not replaced during phase one. The windows will meet the same performance and aesthetic requirements. The main entry ways will also be upgraded in this project.
27. MUMFORD HALL – MULTIPLE BUILDING RESTROOM RENOVATIONS
This project will renovate restroom facilities in five buildings: Freer Hall, Main Library, Materials Science and Engineering Building, Mumford Hall, and Noyes Laboratory. These facilities were identified as those in which restroom renovation efforts would provide significant benefit to campus due to volume of usage. Work will include extensive upgrades to existing restrooms and provide opportunities to repurpose existing spaces into restrooms in some facilities.
28. EDUCATION BUILDING – CLASSROOM ENHANCEMENTS – PHASE 1
The principal objective of this project is to make upgrades to the existing finishes: flooring, painting, ceiling, window blinds and lighting, classroom furniture, and technology used in the classrooms to teach and collaborate.
29. TURNER HALL CROP SCIENCES AND SOILS LABORATORY REMODEL
The Crop Sciences and Soils Laboratory will be renovated as a part of the Instructional Space Improvement (ISI) Initiative (Project plans will follow the recommendations of the feasibility studies that were prepared in 2007 and 2009. Life safety and HVAC improvements will be made as well.
30. INTEGRATED BIOPROCESSING RESEARCH LABORATORY (IBRL)
The IBRL will facilitate multi-disciplinary research for chemical, biological, and physical conversion of renewable feed stocks to biofuels and other value-added products. This project will assist in scaling up processes from the laboratory using an integrated small-scale pilot plant facility. Once complete, the IBRL will help enable innovative research to market application and commercial products.

31. MEMORIAL STADIUM – WEST SITE IMPROVEMENTS FOR LOT 36
The project will include site improvements to Lot 36, located immediately west of Memorial Stadium (clearing, topsoil/earthwork, lawn repair, groundcovers, perennials, understory plants, ornamental trees, canopy trees, site utility upgrades, concrete walks, pavers, curbs, stairs, retaining walls and accessible ramps, ornamental fencing and gates, and columns along fencing). A paved entry will be created from First Street to the Red Grange statue. Accessible ramps will lead around the statue to the upper stadium entry level. A perimeter ornamental fence (with openings) is planned along Kirby Avenue, First Street, and includes entry to the parking lot. Hardscape improvements equal approximately 45,000 GSF and softscape improvements equal approximately 200,000 GSF.
32. PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE RESIDENCE HALLS – RESTROOM RENOVATION – PHASE 1
The multi-user restroom space on each floor of two Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls (Babcock and Saunders) will be converted to eight single-use restrooms within the existing footprint of the present restroom space. This renovation will provide University Housing with the flexibility to assign floors on a co-educational basis. This renovation will also provide the residents with improved privacy, comfort, and accessibility.
33. PARKING LOT E14 – LIGHTING RENOVATION
This project will improve the lighting system and infrastructure for Lot E14. This includes removing and replacing buried cable, light foundations, light poles, and light fixtures. The renovations will replace outdated, inefficient lighting with a new sustainable LED lighting system.
34. STATE FARM CENTER – RENOVATION AND ADDITION
More than 50 years after its opening on the Urbana campus, the State Farm Center renovation and addition will modernize and revitalize the historic structure, ensuring the home for Illini basketball remains one of the top collegiate multi-purpose facilities in the nation for generations to come.
Preserving the character of the facility, while also allowing the men’s and women’s basketball teams to play two seasons in Champaign during the renovation process, established a challenging and unique construction schedule. This project will include architectural and engineering services and construction management services for design, construction document, bidding, construction administration, and post construction phases for the complete renovation and additions of the State Farm Center. 35. HORTICULTURE FIELD LABORATORY – ARCHIVES RESEARCH CENTER HVAC RENOVATION – PHASE 2
This project will replace the existing mechanical infrastructure and improve the vault envelope with the intent of more tightly maintaining conditions suitable for the university’s collection. The proposed renovation will remove the HVAC systems in the existing attic mechanical room and replace with a new system that is properly sized for the building cooling load. The existing oversized air-cooled chilled water system will also be replaced with a new heat rejection system. A pre-action fire protection system will be added to protect the collection and facility. Temperature and humidity control will also be addressed.
36. GOLF STORAGE FACILITY
This project will provide a 3,200 GSF prefabricated structure in the southwest corner of the golf practice area on Wright Street extended. The new facility shall include storage for golf course maintenance vehicles including mowers, rollers, golf carts, and other necessary maintenance equipment and tools. There will also be a designated area for tool repairs and a green keeper’s office.
37. ENTERPRISE WORKS – HVAC SYSTEM UPGRADE
This project will remove and replace the existing obsolete pneumatic variable air volume box controllers with new direct digital control modules and install occupancy and temperature sensors.
38. VETERINARY MEDICINE LARGE ANIMAL CLINIC – RENOVATION
This project will address multiple locations at the College of Veterinary Medicine with the primary focus on animal handling areas within and around the Large Animal Clinic. Upgrades to walls, floor finishes, and animal handling equipment will be included in the renovation of wards 2, 4, and the isolation ward. Fixed tables and seating for students will be replaced in lecture halls 2251 and 2258 of the Basic Sciences Building. Renovation of the ambulatory medicine and clinical pathology lab spaces in the Small Animal Clinic will include a revised room layout and evaluation of the existing ventilation system. A new entrance drive and animal control fencing and gates will be added to the Large Animal Clinic building exterior to improve animal handling. An animal hoist system will be replaced in the Large Animal Clinic wards 1 and 2. The clinical skills learning center will be renovated to include new ceilings, flooring, and plumbing fixture upgrades that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. (More information:
39. JAPAN HOUSE – BRIDGE
A new Japanese-style pedestrian bridge spanning the body of water northeast of the Japan House will be constructed.
TRANSPORTATION NETWORK AND UTILITIES INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS
A. GOODWIN AVENUE EXTENDED AT COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
This project will provide surface repairs to the oil and chip access roadway (Goodwin Avenue extended) from St. Mary’s Road south and on the west side of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Minor drainage improvements will also be made at the intersection of Goodwin Avenue extended and Hazelwood Drive with some additional full-depth pavement repairs planned at that corner.
B. FOURTH STREET UTILITIES INFRASTRUCTURE
This project will repair steam tunnel infrastructure at the intersection of Fourth Street and Gregory Drive beginning in July. Fourth Street will be closed just south of Gregory Drive to accommodate this work.
C. SANITARY SEWER FORCE MAIN
The Urbana Champaign Sanitary District (USCD) will place a new sanitary sewer force main that extends into campus immediately following Commencement. The total project will be constructed from the northwest corner of Scott Park in Champaign to the intersection of Fourth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. On campus, the new force main will be constructed along Fourth Street between Armory Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. The project will necessitate the closure of East Peabody Drive, from Fourth Street to Sixth Street, starting on Thursday, May 21.

ALLERTON MAIN HOUSE – ROOF REPLACEMENT AND CHIMNEY REPAIRS
The existing roof on the main house and the connected carriage house will receive repairs. The existing chimneys in both locations will also be addressed. All of the existing slate and flat roof areas on both buildings will be replaced. New copper or alternative material gutters, gutter liners, scuppers, downspouts, flashings, lightning protection, and snow guards will be provided as well. Portions of the existing chimneys will be removed and replaced while other areas will be repaired and tuck-pointed.
CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING RESEARCH LABORATORY (CERL) – MAIN BUILDING #2 – AIR HANDLING UNIT (AHU) REPLACEMENT
The work will include the replacing the existing air handling unit above the executive office area in main building #2. The work entails the removal of the existing AHU which is currently suspended in the ceiling space above the area. A new AHU will be installed on the existing roof to provide more accessible maintenance and outside air access.
MAIN BUILDING 1 & 2 – ROOF REPLACEMENTS
The existing roof on the main building 1 and 2 will be replaced. The new project will replace selected existing flat roof areas on both buildings with a new un-ballasted, fully-adhered, single-ply membrane roof system. New roof insulation, fascia, copings, and flashings will be provided as well.
CROP SCIENCES RESEARCH FACILITY – MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS
A new 1,890 GSF wood-framed building structure will be constructed. The new facility will contain three offices and a small classroom space. LEED® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Green Building Council.
